Workshop Description

Liberatory social work practice is about creating spaces of liberation through a trauma informed social justice lens. There is a tendency to view trauma and traumatic experiences through a deficit lens, but what if we looked at trauma, the naming and defining of trauma, from the lens of opportunity? What is our responsibility as social workers to help our clients find joy?

This course interrogates the field of social work from the places of trauma, joy and liberation. The presenter will discuss ways to address various forms of traumas, including cultural, systemic, and individual trauma., The presenter will identify the manifestations of trauma and ways that trauma has the opportunity to bring joy and liberation. This workshop will, unpack, deconstruct and position trauma as something normative that impacts our individual and collective consciousness. In addition, the workshop will offer ways that social workers can help their clients develop a liberatory and critical consciousness towards trauma.

This webinar unpacks trauma informed practice from a social justice lens and concludes with ways to create spaces of joy and liberation in practice.

How do we hold space for Racism and Anti-Semitism? How do we, as social workers, promote and embody the practice of solidarity? This workshop will unpack Racism and Anti-Semitism and engage participants in a discussion about building alliances and shared struggles. The presentation will explore intersecting identities and offer tools to more authentically engage in  social work practice.

Presenter: Pavlo Lushyn (Educational Foundations) will make a case for the end of the “PTSD industry” (Stephen Joseph) and the emergence of a more generative view of trauma articulated by the Post-Traumatic Growth Movement.  As a practitioner of both psychotherapy and teaching, Professor Lushyn’s lecture integrates theory with stories of post-traumatic growth, reflecting his decades of work in and out of the classroom, and his most immediate experiences supporting Ukrainians experiencing the trauma of war today. Professor Lushyn will draw on his experiences and expertise to suggest implications for teaching – relevant to all instructors as we continue to encounter a student population that exhibits mental health disturbances in response to traumatic experiences. 

Respondent: Laura Quiros (Social Work and Child Advocacy) will provide an initial response to Professor Lushyn’s talk based on work using trauma-informed pedagogies to advance social justice by building social connection, inclusion, and empathetic accountability.

Educational training and dialogue designed for mental health professionals, on the intersections of trauma and trauma-informed practice from a social justice lens.

Professor Laura Quiros is new to Montclair, but not new to teaching, pedagogy, or social justice. These three passions led her to develop an approach toward trauma-informed pedagogy that furthers her goals as a social justice advocate and educator. In this workshop, instructors will learn about trauma-informed pedagogy and its usefulness in advancing social justice aims. Participants can expect to learn by doing and working in small groups, and to leave with ideas for enacting this pedagogical approach in their own courses and disciplines. This event will be held online and in person, and refreshments will be provided for in-person attendees.

This presentation will introduce trauma-informed practice from a social justice lens as a call to action. It will focus on ways to reimagine a practice and leadership style that uses collaboration, empowerment and trustworthiness under the umbrella of social justice to build communities that are grounded in compassion and accountability and whose leaders employ these practices.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion, participants will be able to:

Understand trauma and trauma-informed practice from a social justice perspective;

Learn skills in practicing and leading through a trauma-informed social justice lens; and

Help build a community of leaders with a trauma-informed social justice approach.
